Teaming: A Foundation for Prevention and Preparedness
Wednesday May 7, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am CDT
School safety is linked to improved student and school outcomes. Intentionality around planning is required by teams to address a comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), build systems of support for at-risk populations, and ideally address school safety prior to a crisis. Teaming should be the foundation of a comprehensive approach to maintaining a safe school, which offers a balance between physical and psychological safety. By fostering collaboration among educators, administrators, counselors, and community partners, schools can proactively identify risks, create supportive environments, and respond quickly to emerging situations. This collective effort builds trust, ensures student well-being, and strengthens the school's ability to handle crises effectively. Participants will gain knowledge in building these systems of support and obtain resources to navigate teaming around crisis prevention.

It’s About Relationships: The Case for BTAMs OPEN
Wednesday May 7, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am CDT
Behavior Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) has been villainized as a contributor to the school-to-prison pipeline, but when BTAMs are correctly deployed, they narrow that pipeline. When BTAMs are successful, they implement non-punitive interventions early, thus preventing school violence without using criminal charges. This presentation will discuss the broad outlines of the structure and functions of a school BTAM, emphasizing the importance of communication and relationship building.

Tackling Behaviors through Data and Systems OPEN
Wednesday May 7, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am CDT
To make managing significant behaviors a team effort, we must leverage specific data, implement targeted team meetings, and provide ready-to-use tools. Just as we approach deficits in math and reading, behavior challenges require a data-driven strategy. As leaders, it is our responsibility to equip general education staff with the tools and knowledge they need to feel confident in working with these students. The reliance on special education as the sole solution must shift. The first step is establishing systems that ensure teachers feel supported and prepared for the challenge. Come to see, data tracking tools for extreme behaviors and building systems as a school to support them.

Listen More + Tell Less = Safe + Supportive OPEN
Wednesday May 7, 2025 10:00am - 10:50am CDT
People, in general, don't know how to listen well. They might hear perfectly fine, yet not be a good listener. It is a skill that first has be to introduced to us then requires constant work and attention on ourselves, not on the communication skills of those around us. We can't control when someone is struggling, fearful, or dysregulated. We can learn to control how we listen to them to create safety and support. We will look at how we hear key words and see key expressions that trigger our problem solving skills, our desire to jump in and fix, advise, and rescue others from their pains.
Come to this session ready to practice HOW TO listen and be ready to leave behind your well-intentioned advice for others.

Supportive Rural School-based Health Clinics Through a Pediatric Mental Health Care Access Program OPEN
Wednesday May 7, 2025 11:00am - 11:50am CDT
Rural youth face unique mental health challenges compared to their urban peers, including limited access to mental healthcare. School-based health centers (SBHCs) are uniquely positioned to make youth mental health services accessible and to address common access-to-care barriers that these youth and their families face.

The KU School of Medicine-Wichita Department of Pediatrics operates two rural SBHCs with an interprofessional team of medical and mental health providers, and with the support of KSKidsMAP – a Pediatric Mental Health Care Access (PMHCA) program in Kansas. PMHCA programs can support SBHCs in providing evidence-based screening, assessment, and interventions for behavioral and mental health concerns.

This session will explore the role of SBHCs in expanding access to mental health care, opportunities for PMHCA programs like KSKidsMAP to support these clinics, and lessons learned through KSKidsMAP's expansion initiative with local rural SBHCs.

Reunification During School Emergencies: You Live and You Learn! OPEN
Wednesday May 7, 2025 1:30pm - 2:20pm CDT
"During critical events, such as school threats, the priority is always the safety of students and staff. Reunification procedures play a vital role in ensuring students are safely reunited with their families. In the fall of 2022, Haysville schools faced a challenging situation that required off-site reunification of students and parents.

Join us for a discussion with the Executive Director of Operations, Director of Special Services, and a Campus High School teacher as they share their firsthand experiences from that day.

During the session, you can expect to hear firsthand stories and lessons learned from professionals who were directly involved in the process. Here are some potential key points that will likely be covered:

· Challenges in Reunification: The process of reuniting students with parents during a crisis can be chaotic. Expect to hear about difficulties in communication, tracking students, and ensuring the safety of everyone involved.

· Positive Aspects and Successes: It’s just as important to reflect on what went well. This could include effective communication strategies, pre-established protocols, and strong collaboration between staff members and emergency services that helped streamline the process.

· Considerations for Special Services: Students who require special services or accommodations may face additional barriers during reunification. The Director of Special Services will offer valuable perspectives on how to address specific needs, whether it's medical considerations, mobility issues, or communication support.

· Post-Event Improvements: In the aftermath of such an event, schools often debrief and reassess their procedures to identify areas for improvement. Delve into what has been modified or updated in the protocols to ensure a faster, more efficient reunification in the future.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about how our schools have adapted and improved after a critical event and how we can continue to strengthen our procedures to ensure the safety of everyone involved."

Tying It All Together: Resilience, Relationships, and Rethinking Discipline OPEN
Wednesday May 7, 2025 1:30pm - 2:20pm CDT
The post-pandemic classroom landscape has brought new challenges, with increased behaviors surfacing, particularly in elementary settings. While many districts have invested in trauma-informed training, educators are left asking, “Now what?” This session provides practical next steps by unpacking the core tenets of resilience—a science rooted in relationships and biology—and exploring the pivotal challenge of discipline versus punishment.
Participants will gain insights into approaches that maintain relationships between students and staff, even amidst big behaviors and misconduct. These strategies focus on teaching respect, accountability, and ways for students to repair harm and "clean up their messes." The session will also offer actionable behavior hacks and preventative strategies to create proactive and supportive environments.
Understanding the impact of trauma is just the beginning. When we embrace a mindset shift—thinking differently because we now know differently—we unlock innovative ways to approach the challenges we face in today’s classrooms. Join us as we explore how to move from awareness to action, fostering classrooms where students and staff thrive together.

Restorative B.R.I.D.G.E.S.- Empowering Expelled and Suspended Students OPEN
Wednesday May 7, 2025 2:30pm - 3:20pm CDT
Do long-term suspension and expulsion hearings feel like the worst part of your job as a school leader? Do you wonder how the student will address the initial concern while also wondering if they can return to the school setting successfully? It feels terrible to expel students. Sometimes we don't have a choice, and while we take a collective breath after the chaos, the student is likely alone with more gaps and less positive connection in their near future.

Come learn how building B.R.I.D.G.E.S. can restore relationships, address student behaviors, and set the student on a path to success. Participants will leave this session with tools and strategies to address behaviors before the need for a hearing arises, as well as resources and solutions for use during and after the hearing process. Leaders will learn how to utilize empathy maps and restorative practice reentry circles designed to highlight students’ strengths and areas of concern, the tremendous growth occurring during the suspension/expulsion, and to talk plainly about challenges as all stakeholders prepare for the student’s return to school. Experience how we can work together as we build restorative bridges to support the student, family, and staff members to prioritize future success.

Reunification During School Emergencies: You Live and You Learn! OPEN
Thursday May 8, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am CDT
During critical events, such as school threats, the priority is always the safety of students and staff.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about how our schools have adapted and improved after a critical event and how we can continue to strengthen our procedures to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
